Abbie King

Abbie King

at Sunrise Presbyterian Church on Sullivan's Island

We shift our focus to the wonders of our Lowcountry environment when we present Abbie King. Abbie has worked for the past eight years as a Sea Turtle Field Technician at Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, South Carolina's most prolific turtle nesting site with over 3,000 nests laid in the 2023 season. Abbie's remarkable images of her work with turtles will inspire anyone who loves turtles and their seasonal return to the Lowcountry. Be sure to bring the whole family to this one!

Clean Up Day

Sunday · October 6
Clean Up Day

at Battery Gadsden Cultural Center

Getting our dear old Battery ready for another season of events, especially the upcoming HALO production, is going to require some work. On Sunday, October 6th, the boards of both BGCC and HALO are sponsoring a clean-up/fix-up day at the Battery. We need your help! We'll be sweeping, vacuuming, painting and more. To entice you, we'll be providing food and drink to keep you going. This will also be a chance to meet board members and faithful volunteers from both organizations. Can you give us at least part of your day? If so, please let us know by email at batterygadsden@gmail.com so we can plan for plenty of food and drink. Many hands make light work! We hope to see you there.

The Medium

"The Medium"

at Battery Gadsden Cultural Center

In our spring newsletter we told you about the exciting new relationship between BGCC and Holy City Arts (HALO). Well, the time is approaching for the first production thanks to this new arts residency. On October 24th and 26th HALO will present Gian Carlo Menotti's The Medium, on the Battery Gadsden "stage," aka gun mount #1. Here's the description from our friends at HALO:

"This October, immerse yourself in an unforgettable night of spine-tingling performances at Battery Gadsden as HALO presents Gian Carlo Menotti’s musical thriller The Medium. Explore the historic grounds, enjoy drinks, snacks, and perhaps a tarot reading or two before the terror unfolds. As an added bonus, experience an intimate reenactment of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Black Cat indoors, before convening outdoors for The Medium, a gripping tale of deception and supernatural encounters. Don’t miss this performance event celebrating two iconic artists with ties to Charleston’s rich history.

Pre-show activities begin at 6:30pm, "The Medium" begins at 7:30pm on October 24 and 26."

Whether or not you were lucky enough to see Sondheim's Into the Woods in 2022 when it was staged at Battery Gadsden by HALO, I thought you might be interested to see how much work and detail goes into such a professional production. Here's a link to a short video HALO put together. This should really get you excited for more live musical theater at Battery Gadsden!

Members Dinner

Saturday · November 2
Annual Members Dinner

at Battery Gadsden Cultural Center

Meet up with old and new BGCC members as we celebrate the rich culture of Sullivan's Island. We are fortunate once again to have secured the services of famous local caterer, Jamie Westendorf. You know what that means… great food! As always, this will be a free benefit for those of you who have been kind enough to join as dues-paying members and are current on your dues. We try to send out renewal notices when your membership is due, but if you're ever not sure of where you stand, just drop us an email at batterygadsden@gmail.com and we'll be happy to check. Our annual members' dinner has proven to be undoubtedly one of your favorite member benefits.

Your Opinion

Your opinion matters when it comes to our programming. What would you like to see in the way of programs and activities? Our Board of Directors would love to hear from you about any topic, but especially new ideas for programming. This becomes especially important as we see the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding rapidly approaching. BGCC is serving as the liaison between the town and SC250 Charleston, the local planning committee for all events we hope to have happen between 2025 and 2033, covering eight years of celebration, the same length of time as the American Revolution. If you're not familiar with the work of this group or its parent organizations, America250 and SC250, be sure to check our their websites. The goals of this group are very similar to BGCC's: preserving our shared history, providing inclusive events and programs, and bettering the fabric of our communities. Please be in touch with us regarding your ideas.

Our Purpose

Battery Gadsden Cultural Center, a non-profit established in 1992, seeks to share the rich history of Sullivan's Island through lectures and performances. We hope to create a museum of the civilian life of Sullivan's Island. We host community events and wish to serve as a showcase for artists, lecturers, musicians, and performers.

Our local publication, "Sullivan's Island Magazine," wrote about us in its Winter-Spring 2018-2019 issue. Click here to read an article about the Battery Gadsden Cultural Center.
